Twitch Hires Its First Head of Diversity And Inclusion
Run for the hills…
Over the years I’ve lost count of how many times a new HR employee has pulled me into their office for quick chat RE: corporate image. We’re dealing with an employee who’s email, account, computer – the whole works – I built the scripts for, who have then turned around to assess my suitability as an employee because of my tattoos.
Nevermind that I technically, financially and hierarchically outranked
Here is where it gets very clever. They’re calling themselves “Diversity And Inclusion”, whereas, in reality, HR comes from a breed that has the polar opposite function regardless of the semantics. Compliance, at its core, is there to ensure business avoid lawsuits at all costs. There’s a myriad of ways those suits can arrive. The other issue with HR is that they are a police unto themselves. They have, at least in Australia, the ability to overthrow C.E.O’s if there is even an iota of distrust or suspected foul play. They pull all kinds of weird and wonderful strings in the process. Strings outside the office they parasitically inhabit. You put that power in the hands of somebody with Tall Poppy syndrome and you have a never-ending shitstorm of issues.
How does any of this relate to Twitch? Well, they just hired their first head of diversity and inclusion. This is a major scapegoat within the HR department they already have there. It gives them more power when it comes to the decisions they make with who they remove or keep on the platform should any of those decisions ultimately go to court. It allows them to say “we have this female person of colour with all of these years of experience so we can’t be exclusive” – while in the commission of the exact opposite. To be lazy and metaphor poorly, it’s like the white guy who proclaims not to be racist because they have a black friend right after saying some racist shit.
Only this time Its Twitch. Instead of the dude just saying some racist shit and shrugging accountability using some piss-weak strawman, it’s somebody’s career being ended in the courts because Twitch has diversity and inclusion on their payroll.
I, for one, remain sceptical of this decision. Twitch
